Fashion Forecasting

Semester 2 has kicked off with a project called 'Fashion Forecasting'. It's pretty self explanatory - we have to basically look at the trends past or predicted from 2010/2012, and come up with our own take on them. My project, after a shaky start with many conflicting ideas, is based on 'underwater'. As it is still early days in the project, I have not yet started sampling. Instead I have been focusing on the drawing side, looking at colours, textures and underwater creatures (I have decided that the octopus is the single most disgusting.... thing? (I don't quite know what you'd class them as!) To look at, ever.). Anyway, I'll be updating this post regularly with comments as to how I'm getting on and more photos. Here's a couple from my sketchbook so far.

Here's another update. I have been working on more drawing and collecting information whilst looking at composition and colour. I am now moving onto sample making which I am very excited about - that's if I can actually get into the knit room - and I am hoping to produce some exciting pieces.

  1. hi,
i was wondering if you could tell me where you sourced your images for your sketchbook?
I'm doing something similar and finding it a tad difficult to get such great photos.

    thanks!

  2. Hello!
I was actually quite bad and got most of my images from the internet (slap on the wrist from my tutor) which images are you referring to? The fashion images or the sea life? Most of my fashion images came from Vogue and Elle magasines but I used a few websites which I can give you if you would like, the sea life images are mostly from the National Geographic magasines and website!! Let me know if you want those websites!

  3. okay well.. i liked the ones with the colour schemes next to them, (if they where from a magazine i should be able to source them from my library) and also the one captioned underwater, from the first sketchbook page. i also liked the one on the third page, the one of the girl amongst the water.

The websites would be really helpful, thanks!

I’ve just started my first year studding textile design in Australia, funny we are doing a very similar thing :)
Finding it tricky to represent this theme in a knit though, how did you go?

  4. I used 'Textile View Magazine' Summer 2010/2011 (can't remember which one exactly ha) hopefully you'll have them in your library, they're great for referencing. Elle mag from March 2011 and Vogues from Feb and March 2011 were really helpful for imagery.
I would just buy as many fashion magazines as you can and have a rummage through them, you can usually find great images in them.
I've put up a new post showing my knit samples, hopefully you'll find them interesting! I got on ok with them, I found it difficult getting the colours bang on because we didn't have enough time to dye any yarns but otherwise they went alright.
How are you enjoying your course so far? I would love to study in Aus, it's a gorgeous place. Scotland doesn't have quite the same scenery, ha ha.

  5. sweet thanks, we should have all those magazines in our library so i'll have a look tomorrow. i just got a subscription for vogue but its hard buying heaps of magazine because they are pretty expensive here.

ahhh my gosh haha your swatches are sooooo nice! haha i've done 3 of 4 of mine and they are super shit. its my first time knitting though so i only know the basic techniques i guess. I have basically just done lots of welts and lace. i like your colours alot actually, much more realistic and sea-like then mine. ahhh so jealous -__-

I would ask you how you did it but it looks impossible to explain!

Hmmm well I think I like my course, just getting into it at the moment, but its pretty full on. Well I’d much rather be in Scotland, so I think we should trade places :P

  6. did you find the mags? sorry i'm taking ages to reply, useless at keeping up to date on my blog!
Thanks! They're actually not as complicated to knit as they look - just a lot of repetition. Once you've done it a couple times it'll be easy. I'm sure your samples aren't that bad ha ha but yeah just keep it up!
I would love to stay in sunny aus, I'll swap for rainy cold boring Scotland anytime ha.
I was having a look at your tumblr by the way, great photos! have you got any of your work up?

and its not really that sunny where i am, in melbourne. i think its 19 today. but i guess the top of aus is always hot. i like the cold though, when your in a nice warm place with blankets and hot chocolate haha

ohh cool, well i had some things i had done at the start of the blog, but nothing to do with textile design if thats what you were refering to. maybe once i produce something internet-worthy, ill post it up on here. :)
